Closing the Digital Evidence Gap So Police Can Stop Crime Faster

Technology has transformed how we live, work and communicate. Unfortunately, it has also changed how crime happens.

Today, many serious crimes leave a digital trail. Whether it’s extortion, human trafficking, or child exploitation, investigators are often trying to track down a phone number, an IP address, or another digital clue that can help identify suspects and protect victims.

But for too long, Canada’s lawful access laws have not kept pace with the realities of the digital age. Police have sometimes had to wait weeks or even months to obtain basic information that could help move an investigation forward. During that time, harm can continue and victims can remain at risk.

That’s why I support efforts to modernize Canada’s lawful access legislation through Bill C-22.

This legislation would help ensure that law enforcement can access critical digital information more quickly when investigating serious crimes, while still respecting the important privacy protections Canadians expect. It is about giving police the tools they need to do their job effectively and to keep our communities safe.

I want to thank Peel Regional Police and policing leaders across Canada who have long advocated for these changes. Their experience on the front lines has helped shape a proposal that aims to strike the right balance between public safety and privacy.

I also want to thank the Prime Minister for his leadership on this issue. When we spoke recently, we discussed the importance of strengthening and improving the legislation to ensure it provides police with the tools they need while maintaining appropriate safeguards. I appreciate his willingness to listen and support improvements to the bill.

Now that this legislation has been introduced, my hope is that Parliament will move quickly to pass it. Giving law enforcement the ability to access critical digital information faster can make a real difference in stopping crime and protecting victims.

Public safety must always be a priority. As technology continues to evolve, our laws must evolve with it. Modernizing lawful access is an important step toward ensuring that our justice system can respond effectively to crime in the digital age and continue to protect the people we serve.
