May 26th marked the 59th anniversary of Guyana’s independence—a milestone that resonates in Brampton, where more than 14,000 Guyanese-Canadians call home.
The impact on our city is undeniable. From business owners, health care workers, educators and community leaders, the Guyanese community has added incredible economic and cultural value to our local life. Their sense of community have helped shape our diverse and thriving city.
It’s also an exciting time to recognize the progress of Guyana itself. With one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, driven by its energy sector, the country is undergoing a transformation while committing to staying a net-zero carbon emitter. Even while tapping into its oil resources, Guyana is prioritizing sustainability and protecting its vast forests.
We celebrated this important day with the community and were proud to stand with our Guyanese neighbours and recognize both their contributions to Brampton and their homeland’s journey.
Happy 59th Independence Anniversary, Guyana!
