Brampton Stands with Jamaica: “One Love” Hurricane Melissa Relief Effort

In the wake of the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on Jamaica, the City of Brampton has joined forces with the Consul General of Jamaica, community partners, and local volunteers to launch a citywide humanitarian relief effort. Speaking at a press conference alongside the Consul General Kurt Davis, Mayor Patrick Brown emphasized Brampton’s deep ties to Jamaica and the city’s commitment to supporting families recovering from the disaster.

“Many in Brampton have family and friends directly affected—this is not a distant tragedy. When our Jamaican brothers and sisters hurt, we feel the pain,” Mayor Brown said, highlighting the close cultural and personal bonds shared between the two communities. He reflected on his own childhood memories of Jamaica, underscoring the warmth, friendship, and longstanding connection Brampton residents feel toward the island.

To coordinate support, the City has launched Brampton One Love: Hurricane Melissa Relief for Jamaica, establishing a central drop-off location at 8 Rutherford Road South where residents can donate urgently needed items. These include canned and dry foods, clean water, hygiene supplies, baby products, school supplies, and medical necessities. All donations will be shipped directly to affected communities through official relief channels.

The Mayor also praised the leadership of the Consul General, the Black Employees Empowerment Network, and Councillors Navjit Brar and Michael Palleschi, who have been running additional donation drives across Wards 2 and 6. Brampton businesses, faith groups, youth, and volunteers from every corner of the city have stepped up—transforming local food drives, events, and even sporting tournaments into fundraising and donation opportunities.

The Consul General provided a powerful update on the situation in Jamaica, describing widespread destruction across western parishes and a long-term recovery effort that will require sustained international support. He expressed deep gratitude to Brampton residents, businesses, and community groups for mobilizing so quickly and generously.

“Everything you give—no matter how small—makes a meaningful difference,” he said, noting that Jamaica is resilient and ready to rebuild, but will need ongoing partnership in the months and years ahead.
