When a car is stolen from a Brampton driveway, there’s a good chance it’s already on its way overseas through the Port of Montreal. If you’re organized crime in Canada, you know there’s a 99% chance your stolen goods will make it out of the port. That’s the reality we’re up against.
Scanners at the port will change the game. But we can’t wait three years for them. Our residents are being terrorized right now.
Auto theft has become more brazen. It’s no longer just cars taken overnight. Organized crime is kicking in doors at 3:00 AM, and violent carjackings are happening in our neighbourhoods. The New York Times called Toronto a candy store for stolen cars. The same is true across the GTA and across Ontario.
That’s why the Region of Peel, together with our Police Services Board, passed a motion demanding these scanners be installed in the second quarter of this year. We also need law enforcement with real jurisdiction at the port reviewing those scans, or we need to let local police do it. More of the same approach isn’t working.
We can stop this. We can turn the corner. And it starts with scanners at the Port of Montreal.
