Big Changes for Public Safety in Peel — Why It Matters

Peel Region has reached a major milestone this year (2025) with the successful hiring of 300 new frontline police officers and 100 civilian staff, the largest increase in Peel Regional Police history. For residents, this achievement directly affects everyday life, from how quickly help arrives in an emergency to how safe your neighbourhood feels as the region continues to grow.

For years, Peel’s rapid population growth placed increasing pressure on emergency services. The 911 centre regularly managed more calls than officers available to respond, and some residents experienced wait times that no community should have to face. The addition of 300 new officers and 100 civilian staff brings long-needed relief. Residents can expect faster responses, improved follow-up on investigations, and more consistent service when they reach out for help.

This milestone also means greater visibility in the places residents value most like parks, schools, transit hubs, commercial plazas, and local neighbourhoods. With more officers available, Peel Police can shift from reactive policing to a more proactive, community-focused approach. That presence is not just reassuring; it’s proven to reduce crime and enhance trust between residents and frontline officers.

Peel is already seeing the benefits. Expanded investigative teams and strengthened frontline units have contributed to reductions in auto theft, violent crime, and commercial robberies. Specialized units including those focused on intimate partner violence, extortion, and drug enforcement now have the staffing needed to intervene earlier and support vulnerable residents more effectively.

Behind the milestone are the people who chose to wear the uniform. Many of the new recruits grew up in Peel or joined because they wanted to serve the communities they call home. Their diverse backgrounds and lived experiences help build a police service that reflects the region it serves.

For a region adding the equivalent of a mid-sized Canadian city every few years, Project 300 represents more than a staffing achievement. It is a commitment to making sure residents are safe in their homes, confident when they call 911, and supported in moments of vulnerability. As Peel continues to grow, this investment ensures that community safety grows with it.

Residents can look forward to a police service that is better equipped to protect us today and build a safer tomorrow.
