Canada’s Largest Ramadan Lights Unveiled at City of Brampton Community Iftar

What an inspiring gathering at Brampton City Hall as we came together to celebrate Ramadan and break fast as a community.

The turnout was tremendous. City Hall was filled to capacity, and families stepped outside in the cold to witness a truly special moment, the unveiling of Brampton’s first ever Ramadan Mubarak light installation.

Brampton is home to 25 vibrant masjids that serve our growing Muslim community, and their leadership, service and outreach continue to strengthen the fabric of our city.

For many years, I have fasted for one day during Ramadan in solidarity with our Muslim community, and several members of Council fasted as well. It is not easy. Fasting tests your patience, discipline and mindfulness. It reminds you to slow down, to be grateful and to reflect on how fortunate we are. That first sip of water at sunset is a moment of deep appreciation.

This year’s lighting was especially meaningful. What began as a young woman’s vision to see Ramadan recognized in public spaces has now grown into a national movement. Thanks to Laila Soliman and Ramadan Lights Canada, Brampton is now home to what will be the largest Ramadan lights display in Canada. Hearing the crowd count down together and say “Ramadan Mubarak” as the sign lit up was unforgettable. It was more than lights. It was a symbol that Muslim families in Brampton are seen, celebrated and valued.

Ramadan teaches compassion, generosity and service. I am proud that Brampton continues to stand firmly for religious freedom and multicultural harmony.

To everyone observing Ramadan, I wish you continued reflection, strength and peace in the days ahead.

Ramadan Mubarak, Brampton.
